Although most of the
teams are still counting on the some two matches to have a chance to be chosen
among the last five that will qualify for 2014 Rio de Janeiro masterpiece, not
a single African teams has so far qualified from the group stages to the
five-team playoffs. Much speculation was about the possibilities for Rwanda’s
Amavubi to, at least, sting the Black Antelopes of Algeria so that three more
points would get them in second place but it was otherwise; in Amahoro stadium
1-0 of the visitors. They had a brilliant game in the last 25 minutes of the
first round and in the second half the match played-out skeptically as the
visiting Antelopes stunned Bakame’s net. Now, coach Eric Nshyimiyimana and
assistant Jean Baptist Ntagwabira, who spent all the 90 minutes learning the
visitors’ agitations, are counting on Premier League Pro Alex Mugabo and the
September with Benin to assure their progress for the Brazil World Cup. But
Amavubi’s lone chance is to proceed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations 2014
(CAN) Ethiopia, the second since 2004 debut in Tunisia.
