Top drivers from more
than ten African countries are expected to compete in the event
Dar es Salaam. As the 2013 Africa Rally Championship (ARC)
looms, local drivers have stepped up preparations, making final touches on
perfecting their driving skills.
Pandya rally team
drivers are confident that the anxiously awaited championship will give
Tanzania a golden opportunity to star its score sheet in the seeding points.
Organised by
Automobile Association of Tanzania (AAT), the two-day event will take place in
Dar es Salaam and Coast Region on Saturday and Sunday.
Kiriti Pandya, one of
the veteran drivers in the team, said yesterday that the geographical position
of Tanzania as the centre of Africa’s general route of the championship gives
an opportunity for local drivers to gauge their skills against Africa’s finest.
Top drivers from
various countries across the continent’ including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and
Uganda are expected to compete in the anxiously awaited event.
“We hope to perform
well in the championship after acquiring the much needed experience during the
candidate rallies our country staged in 2001 and 2013.
“In both events, we
fared very well and we managed to beat some of the best drivers from other
countries. The winning spirit has just begun and we hope to extend it further,”
Pandya said
According to Pandya,
there has been remarkable development of motor sports in the country compared
to the past when drivers had a limited experience of the sport.
But local drivers
should not expect a win on a silver platter as drivers from other countries are
reportedly set to make an impact in the event.
Zambian teenage rally
driver Jassy Singh was quoted as saying from Lusaka yesterday that his target
in the event also known as Puma Energy Rally was to finish in the top three.
Jassy, is the son of former African
champion Muna Singh.
