As David Moyes gets to grip with life at the Carrington training
base this week, the new Manchester United manager will do so in the knowledge
that expectations have never been higher at Old Trafford.
As the club's legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy said last
month: 'Everybody expects a league title, an FA Cup or a Champions League
trophy while playing some good football. The pressure will be full on.'
And however self-assured Moyes may be feeling as he takes his seat in the Old Trafford dugout for his first home match against Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in August, the presence of his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson will be all-encompassing.
And however self-assured Moyes may be feeling as he takes his seat in the Old Trafford dugout for his first home match against Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in August, the presence of his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson will be all-encompassing.
Taking in the action from Ferguson's former vantage point, Moyes
will see the words 'Sir Alex Ferguson Stand' glaring back at him.
In the stands, the Glaswegian can expect Sir Alex to be watching
on from the Directors' Box.
Supporters will reel out the same songbook. Chants of 'Every
single one of us loves Alex Ferguson' and ditties serenading the icons of the
Ferguson era – Scholes, Solskjaer, Cantona et al – will remain.
Ferguson's positions within the club - those of Director and
Ambassador - are of little threat to Moyes.
